DST AWSAR Program 2022 – Share Your Research Story & Win Cash Prizes. AWSAR was a big success last year and the call for this year has been released. Indian nationals pursuing any stream of Science & Technology (S&T) are encouraged to apply for the DST AWSAR Program as per details below:

Award Categories

AWSAR Awards will be bestowed on 28 February at National Science Day event every year. All the awardees will be given an opportunity to attend Science Film Training Workshop organized by Vigyan Prasar.

Who can apply

Indian citizen pursuing PhD or PDF in any stream of Science and Technology (S&T), within the tenancy period of her/his research, can submit the entry. The story must relate to research being pursued by him/her.

Evaluation Criteria

A panel consisting of eminent science communicators and scientists, constituted by DST, would evaluate the entries.

The stories are evaluated by the experts considering the following points:

Category Criteria
  • Language of the article is simple (minimal equations, technical terms, and formulae).
  • Use of simple, appropriate words and short sentences & paragraphs.
  • Proper use of grammar.
  • The article provides a clear understanding of subject/research.
  • Introduction and conclusion are relevant to the research.
  • Clarity of context, topic and main idea.
  • Information provided is relevant and not overloaded.
Format & Presentation
  • Title is attractive/catchy.
  • Beginning of the article attracts the prospective reader.
  • The article develops the story logically & sustains interest.
  • The content is logically organized.
  • The article accurately and objectively translates even the complex account of the writer’s research into simple non- technical language.
  • Interpretation of science intended for a general audience.
  • The article kindles interest in doing science, especially in students/young people.
  • The article uses suitable metaphors and analogies and relates to everyday experience.


Basic Guidelines for Submitting a Popular Science Article under Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) Programme

AWSAR programme shall have the following guidelines for its implementation:

  1. Any Indian citizen pursuing PhD or Post Doctoral Fellowship in any Science and Technology (S&T) stream is eligible to apply under AWSAR.
  2. The scholars should be enrolled in the PhD program from Government approved Institutions for the last two years. Post Doctoral Fellows (PDF) associated with any recognized institute can also apply.
  3. Preference will be given to applicants with the published paper(s) of their research work. Both full-time and part-time PhD students will be invited for larger participation.
  4. The article should indicate complete research story in simple language to be understood by the general public. No complex figures, graphs, equations or formulae should be included except self-explanatory infographics which may be formulated for effective communication.
  5. Only original articles sent exclusively for nomination for AWSAR award will be accepted.  Articles previously published elsewhere, or simultaneously sent for publication elsewhere, are not acceptable.
  6. The applicants are requested to mention the theme, title of the paper along with their name, affiliation, and contact details in the submitted article.
  7. Articles submitted should carry a declaration that the article is original and has not been previously published elsewhere.
  8. Article of 1000-1500 words (A4-size with 2.5 cm margin on all sides, single column, Times New Roman font, font size 12, 1.5 line spacing written in MS Word) will be accepted for further scrutiny.
  9. Applicants found guilty of plagiarism and multi-story submission will be blacklisted and debarred from being participation in future.
  10. All articles should be submitted through an online portal.
  11. A panel of eminent scientists and science communicators constituted by DST will select the best 100 entries received from PhD scholars and 20 best entries received from postdoctoral fellows.
